Rootstock Trials

Vinifera species are particularly susceptible to root-pests, phylloxera and nematodes.
Vinifera can be protected from these pests by grafting onto suitable rootstock.
Selected rootstocks can also provide growers with the following viticultural benefits:

• Salinity and drought tolerance
• Adaptability to particular soil types
• Influence grape quality

There is no one rootstock that suits all conditions. Suitability of a rootstock for planting depends on wine style as well as vineyard conditions. Therefore it is important that growers choose the rootstock variety with care.

The Phylloxera Board website provides detailed information to assist with the correct choice of rootstock.

The RVIC Rootstock trials were established in 2005-2006.  

Reports from these trials will help build upon the knowledge available.

RVIC plans to establish many more vinifera varieties on a selection of rootstocks over the next three years.
